Unit 89

Ceramic Artist

London, UK

Ceramic artist Ula Saniawa of Unit 89 creates artworks characterised by growth and form. Often made using repetition, fine ceramic filaments combine to deliver pieces of great detail and texture.

Unit 89

My work is made entirely by hand in unglazed porcelain with delicate metal details. I develop additive processes of accumulation, of gestures. These materials create a series, from each unique piece. Putting those pieces together creates a conversation.

Trained as an architect at the Wroclaw University of Technology, the Architectural Association and London Metropolitan University, Ula instinctively understands spatial form.

Understanding the environment is the starting point for every Unit 89 piece. Each design is defined by a process of recognition and response with the space to create a harmonious dialogue. Drawing upon her architectural training, Ula employs parametric modelling techniques; an algorithmic method based on the mathematical principles of growth and form. She then works entirely by hand in unglazed porcelain with additions such as stoneware, oxides, crushed marble and iron. No single piece sits alone; instead, it acts in direct response to its surroundings.
