Tina Vlassopulos is an internationally acclaimed ceramic artist who creates hand-built, vessel-based forms with a strong sense of movement and poise. Her sculptural pieces push clay to its limits, exploring new forms and ideas.

I take a lot of inspiration from the performing arts especially ballet, contemporary dance and opera. Attending a live performance seems to unlock my creativity and allows me the time to freely roam around in my imagination.
Born in London in 1954, Tina graduated from Bristol Polytechnic in 1977 and set up her London studio in the same year. Her work – which is in many public and private collections around the world – has also won international awards. These include The Sidney Myer Fund International Ceramic Award in 2006 and twice at The World Ceramic Biennale Korea in 2009 and 2021.
Tina enjoys the immediacy of using clay straight out of the bag and finishing pieces by burnishing – where clay is polished to a beautiful sheen without the use of glaze – to create depth and tonal variation. Full of movement and fluidity, her work is informed by the performing arts. Often pieces are grouped together, activating the spaces between the work and producing a synergy between the elements. Her ‘pots’ are made with an eye to the possibility of function but this is always balanced by a sculptural context.
