Glass artist Michèle Oberdieck is inspired by natural forms and organic structures. Using glass as a gesture, her work explores balance and asymmetry through shape, surface and colour.

I work against symmetry creating twists and turns in each piece, exploring balance, and capturing fluidity and movement.

Born in Canada, Michèle Oberdieck trained as a textile designer at Glasgow School of Art, and later ran a printed textile practice from the Oxo Tower in London. It was while studying for an MA in Glass at The Royal College of Art in London that she fell in love with blown glass. Focusing on colour merging and surface texture, she became fascinated with the effects created by interweaving cut patterns with light and shadow.

Colour has always played an important role in Michèle's work, moving through printmaking and textiles and into glass. This breadth of experience gives her a heightened awareness of the interaction between colour, light and refraction. She is drawn to biomorphic shapes found in plant growth and decay, attempting to capture these fragile organic forms in glass. In some pieces she employs inventive techniques, such as cold-cutting through colour overlays and then re-blowing the glass, to create ethereal effects with blended colours that evoke memories and emotions.
