Meet Milan's cc-tapis, a distinguished rug maker, renowned for its eco-friendly practices. Crafting meticulous hand-knotted rugs in Himalayan wool.

Shalini Misra Design | Handmade Rug Studio, Milan | Curio

Each rug is handknotted using the finest natural Himalayan wool and sourced from the surrounding areas of the studio’s atelier in Kathmandu, Nepal. No machines are used and everything is handmade by expert artisans following ancient traditional techniques. Every rug passes through many hands. The raw materials are first carded and hand-spun by one team, dyed by a master colour expert, knotted by Tibetan artisans and finished by a team of expert craftspeople who shave, trim and bind the final piece.

Skilled artisans merge their expertise with industrial methods, ensuring thorough assembly, cleaning, and testing. Premium sealers are applied, including antacid, stain-resistant, water, and oil repellent treatments.

He is the visionary founder of Design Interiore, serves as the Creative Director at Estro Collezioni, and is also the co-founder of Stone Stackers.

Grounded in the belief to preserve the eternal value and beauty of the stone, Paula and Shilpa partnered with Simeg Marmi, an Italian marble company, to provide their artists access to redundant marble chunks for creative repurposing. Stone Stackers exclusively uses natural stone and minimises the use of heavy machinery in the creation or refining process, instead favouring hand-wrought techniques. The assembling process unfolds naturally and spontaneously, influenced by the distinct characteristics of the broken slabs, preventing precise replication of the pieces.

Italian brand Stone Stackers creatively repurposes precious discarded marble waste into artful pieces of furniture. Founded by the husband-and-wife duo Shilpa Srinivas and Paolo Ciacci and inspired by the distinctive qualities of the broken marble slabs, their designs are spontaneous as they transcend pre-studied models or shapes.

Bringing together 2500 years worth of weaving traditions with modern sustainability and design, Jaipur Rugs follows a meticulous process rooted in Indian heritage. Beginning with carding and spinning, Katwari artisans layer and transform carefully selected wool into yarn using a spinning wheel, or charka. Yarn is sun-dried and dyed to over 3000 colours and hand-knotted by skilled weavers, a process that can take up to a year. Methodological washing and Gultarash techniques further enhance the rug's quality and finish, resulting in textural masterpieces that showcase the splendour of Persian and Tibetan knots.

Starting with a loan from his father, NK Chaudhary founded Jaipur Rugs in 1978, initially working with nine artisans on two looms. Hailing from Churu, Rajasthan, Chaudhary's journey began with humble beginnings, eventually earning him the title, 'Gandhi of the Carpet Industry’. Chaudhary grew the business into one of the largest hand-knotted rug manufacturers, driven by dignity and human kindness.
